Irvin is an intriguing and well-realised character whose views of the relationship between human kind and nature offers a perspective on The Death not voiced by any other character in the series. The final few minutes of the story, as the remaining members of the group are forced to make an impossible life-or-death decision, are unbearably tense They learn that they have been targeted by the hunter truly responsible for the death and carnage. But, true to the tough perspectives of Survivors, the group soon discover that the assumption on which their mission is predicated is wrong. However, after he is forced to treat an injured Daniel (snared in an animal trap), Irvin is himself gradually ensnared in his visitors' plans. Irvin proves to be a reluctant recruit, apparently unconcerned by the fate of the wider world, and carrying a heavily sense of guilt about staying away from his family (at his wife's insistence) when The Death hit. Greg, Daniel and Russell are sent off into the woods of Brecon Beacons in the hope of convincing Irvin to join them in tracking down a wild animal apparently responsible for the gruesome deaths of many survivors. THE QUEST TO FIND specialist animal hunter Irvin Warner provides the main storyline of episode three: an all-male equivalent to the (all-female) Mother's Courage - the events of which take place in parallel to this dark tale of murderous horror. Will their efforts end in triumph and in freedom for their new friend, or in death and disaster for all.? COMMENTARY Despite the risk, Greg, Daniel and Irwin head off into the dark in an attempt to rescue Russell (if he is still alive) and to deal with this new set of predators. The group are attacked by a raiding gang and Russell is abducted. Settling down for the night, Daniel and Russell recognise the mutual attraction they have for each other. Heading towards Hereford, the hunting party manage to corner and kill the animal: a lion escaped from a safari park or zoo. On the way to Ross-on-Wye, the group are menaced by the creature - but it escapes.
Irwin takes the group to his camp and reluctantly agrees to help them in the hunt for a deadly animal predator.
